The Preston Crown Court trial of 26-year-old Bhekisani Matabiswana, accused of murdering 37-year-old model Luke Harden, has revealed forensic evidence of a brutal assault in Bacup on 28 October 2023. Harden, who attended a Halloween party at Rosemount Working Men’s Club and was heavily intoxicated, was fatally attacked by Matabiswana minutes after leaving the venue.
Forensic Evidence Revealed
A Home Office pathologist outlined that Harden died from severe blunt force trauma to the head, multiple facial fractures, a fractured larynx, and extensive bruising. The injuries, described as catastrophic, are consistent with violent kicks or stamps. Harden showed no defensive wounds, implying he was unable to protect himself during the assault.
One-minute Violent Attack
Prosecutors claim Matabiswana suddenly attacked Harden on Newchurch Road, knocking him down and repeatedly stamping and kicking his head. Witnesses reported seeing Harden lying motionless while the assault continued. This attack allegedly lasted around one minute, leaving Harden fatally injured on the pavement.
Defence Claims Self-defence
Matabiswana denies murder, insisting he acted in self-defence after Harden tried to grab his girlfriend as they walked home. The prosecution disputes this, saying Harden was too intoxicated and unsteady to pose a threat, and that the force used was excessive and unjustified.
Attempted Flight And Messages
Following the assault, Matabiswana reportedly sent messages claiming he “beat someone up for trying to rape some girl” and that the man had “died,” which prosecutors say were attempts to justify his actions. He allegedly used Harden’s phone to contact friends, stating Harden had simply fallen. Blood found on Matabiswana’s clothing further links him to the attack. Two days later, he was arrested at Manchester Airport trying to board a flight to South Africa, interpreted by prosecutors as an attempt to flee justice.
Ongoing Trial
The trial at Preston Crown Court is expected to continue for about two weeks, with further medical, forensic, and witness evidence yet to be presented. Matabiswana continues to deny the charge of murder.
