Brutal Attackers Jailed After Life-Changing Assault in East London
Two violent men have been locked up for a savage attack that left their victim with horrific, life-altering injuries. Ahmed Amizane, 44, and Stuart Battams, 46, both homeless, were convicted of grievous bodily harm at Blackfriars Crown Court on 6 April.
Cold-Blooded Assault in Broad Daylight
The shocking attack unfolded on 1 October 2017 near 1 High Street, East London. Amizane and Battams were with victim Dennis Clarke when they suddenly launched a brutal, unprovoked assault on him on Carlow Street.
A passerby stepped in to help Clarke and stayed by his side until police and paramedics arrived. Clarke was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery after suffering a bleed.
Serious Injuries and Slow Recovery
- A large part of Clarke’s skull was removed to ease brain pressure.
- He needed 37 staples to close wounds to his head.
- He now wears a protective helmet, awaiting further surgery to replace the missing skull piece.
Justice Served
Amizane was caught on CCTV and arrested five days after the attack, found with Clarke’s stolen mobile phone. Battams was arrested later in the month. Both were formally charged with grievous bodily harm.
On sentencing day, Amizane received two years and nine months behind bars, while Battams was jailed for two years and seven months.
Detective Constable Colin Anderson blasted the attackers: “Both Amizane and Battams showed no regard for the severity of their actions or the lasting impact on Mr Clarke and witnesses. They showed zero remorse throughout the trial.”
Detective Inspector Thomas Kearney praised the quick responses of the public and police: “Without their swift action, Mr Clarke’s injuries could have been far worse. Two violent offenders are now off the streets. We will continue to pursue justice for victims in our community.”
