Huddersfield police conducted a significant weapons sweep in local neighbourhoods as part of a crackdown on knife crime. Officers targeted known hotspots to ensure community safety.
The Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team launched a major operation on November 5, focusing on areas including Birkby, Salendine Nook, and Harpe Hinge. This initiative was part of Operation Jemlock, which aims to remove weapons from public spaces and reduce violent crime.
During the day-long search, officers thoroughly checked playing fields, woodlands, hedgerows, and communal areas. Their efforts led to the discovery of dangerous weapons, including a machete and a hammer, which had been hidden or discarded in multiple locations.
Key locations patrolled during the operation included Norman Park in Birkby, The Pavilion on Spaines Road, Salendine Nook Playing Fields, the Harpe Hinge communal area, and Rawthorpe Lane.
Operation Jemlock, launched in April 2019, addresses the rise in serious violence and knife crime across West Yorkshire. Supported by additional funding from the Home Office, the operation has successfully reduced knife-related offences and robberies.
Insp Graham Dyson of the Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team said, “This day of action was organised as part of Operation Jemlock with a view to ensuring any weapons that had either been hidden or discarded in areas were removed prior to any incidents of Anti-Social Behaviour during what is always a busy and eventful evening and night.”
