Essex police have launched a significant crackdown on metal theft, targeting scrap yards, vehicle dismantlers, and known hotspots across the county. From 12 to 16 October, the Rural Engagement Team and Community Policing Teams took coordinated action, supported by British Transport Police, to reduce metal theft crimes.

During the operation, officers visited 25 scrap metal dealers and 10 vehicle dismantlers. They also conducted roadside vehicle checks, catching suspects on the spot. Working in partnership with Border Force at Harwich Port, police stopped over 200 vehicles as part of the enforcement effort. Additionally, Essex police collaborated with Southend and Maldon councils to clamp down on illegal waste carrier licences.

Sergeant Paul Downes emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “The week of action is part of our continued effort to raise awareness within our communities and to help target criminal activity around this crime type nationally. Metal theft can hit heritage sites, telecoms, transport, power—and wreck businesses and the communities they serve.”

As part of the crackdown, officers arrested a 24-year-old man in Harlow during a vehicle stop on 12 October. He faces charges of possession of an offensive weapon.

The community engagement aspect of the operation included a Braintree team awareness day focused on vehicle and motor theft. Public engagement events were also held in Saffron Walden and at M11 service stations. Drivers were warned about catalytic converter theft and provided with practical crime prevention tips.

Essex police urge residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious metal theft activity by calling 101 or visiting essex.police.uk. Intelligence sharing and joint action will continue to tackle this costly crime that impacts communities across the county.
