Two men have been caught in Kent for transporting scrap metal without the necessary licences. Armando Grecu, 26, from Ilford, and Valerica Cismaru, 52, from Erith, faced swift court action after being apprehended earlier this year.
On May 14, Grecu was stopped in Dartford during a police operation on Mead Road. He was found to be carrying scrap metal without a waste carrier licence. Grecu appeared in court on November 21 and was fined a total of £1,121, which included a £300 fine, a £120 victim surcharge, and £701 in costs.
Cismaru was caught earlier on February 12 during the same enforcement operation in Barfield, Sutton at Hone. He was fined £420 by Sevenoaks Magistrates Court for failing to hold the required licence.
Jeremy Kite, leader of Dartford Borough Council, urged the public to always verify their scrap dealer’s licence. He said, “If someone takes your scrap for disposal, it’s vital you check for a waste carrier’s licence. A simple check protects the environment and supports legitimate local businesses.”
He added, “Op Assist is a winning team effort between the council and Kent Police. Expect more convictions like these going forward.”
Sergeant Molly Irwin from Kent Police emphasised the importance of the crackdown. “These criminals damage our countryside, threaten legitimate businesses, and harm communities. By taking action against offenders, we send a clear message: environmental crime will not be tolerated.”
