A man from Guildford has been charged after allegedly racially abusing a police officer during a protest outside The Bell Hotel in Epping.
Darren Summerfield, 35, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He faces charges of racially or religiously aggravated disorderly behaviour intended to cause harassment, alarm, or distress. Additionally, he is charged with using threatening and abusive language linked to a previous protest on 28 December last year.
Summerfield admitted to using abusive language but denied the racial aggravation charge. His trial is scheduled for 12 February 2027 at Colchester Magistrates’ Court.
Following his court appearance, Summerfield was released on strict bail conditions. These include exclusion from Epping enforced by GPS monitoring and a ban on publishing content about The Bell Hotel on his YouTube channel.
Another man, aged 49, was also arrested in connection with racially aggravated disorderly behaviour during the protests. He is currently on bail until 29 April.
During the chaotic protest, police seized flares and fireworks after complaints from local residents about noise and anti-social behaviour. Officers warned that anyone caught using such items could face Community Protection Warnings and potential arrests for breaches.
Chief Inspector Terry Fisher, Epping Forest District Commander, commented: “These measures don’t stop people’s right to protest, but we must balance everyone’s rights. Local residents have told us how flares and fireworks have damaged their quality of life.”
He added, “Peaceful protests are welcome, but please don’t bring hazardous items that risk injury and disturb the community.”
