A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to one year in prison following a fatal hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old moped rider in North Finchley.
Ali Bahramzadeh received a two-and-a-half-year driving ban after admitting to careless driving, driving without insurance, and failing to stop after the collision.
On 17 November 2016, Bahramzadeh took his mother’s Nissan Pixo without permission and was driving along Ashurst Road in North Finchley with several passengers in the vehicle. At the same time, Alfie O’Keefe-Hedges, aged 18, from Hatfield, was riding his moped towards a nearby mini roundabout on Buxted Road.
Bahramzadeh’s car collided with Alfie as he entered the roundabout. The impact threw Alfie over the vehicle. Bahramzadeh and his passengers then abandoned the car and fled the scene.
Alfie sustained severe head injuries and was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Service. He was taken to a hospital in east London but sadly died from his injuries eight days later, on 25 November. A post-mortem examination confirmed that head injuries were the cause of death.
Bahramzadeh later surrendered himself at a north London police station, admitting to hitting the moped. He was charged in May 2017 and was sentenced this month at Wood Green Crown Court. The other passengers in the car have not been identified.
Detective Constable Rob Simpson said: “We can only hope this sentence brings some small comfort to Alfie’s family, devastated by his loss. Let this be a reminder to drivers to take care and avoid needless tragedies.”
