Nathaniel Benson, 45, from Leeds, was arrested at Heathrow Airport after Border Force officers uncovered five suitcases containing more than 100 kilograms of cannabis. The drugs, estimated to be worth around £1 million on the street, were seized following Benson’s arrival from Bangkok on September 18.
Officers discovered 160 packages of cannabis concealed inside the suitcases. In a shocking detail, one bag was checked in under the name of one of Benson’s children, who was travelling with him along with a 41-year-old woman from Harrogate. The woman was also arrested but later released on bail.
Benson faces charges of importing Class B drugs and was scheduled to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on September 20. Ian Truby, Senior Investigating Officer at the National Crime Agency (NCA), stated: “We continue to clamp down on anyone involved in drug smuggling. This includes both the couriers and the organised criminals behind importations like this one.”
The NCA also issued a warning to travellers about the severe penalties for smuggling, which can include up to 14 years in prison. Cannabis seizures at UK borders from countries such as Thailand, Canada, and the US have tripled in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Both the Border Force and the NCA have pledged to continue working together to dismantle drug smuggling operations and bring offenders to justice. This arrest serves as a clear reminder that drug smuggling is a serious offence with heavy legal consequences.
