An Isle of Wight man has been sentenced to 24 years and six months in prison for the murder of former councillor Gerard White.

Jonathan Christopher Stasiuk, 60, of Pier Street, Sandown, admitted to the murder at Southampton Crown Court on Tuesday 12 November. He had initially denied the charge and attempted to plead manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, but the court rejected this defence.

The attack occurred on Monday 27 May in Lake Community Gardens, near Scotchells Brook Lane. Stasiuk himself contacted the police to report the crime. Upon arrival, officers found 73-year-old Mr White of Talbot Road, Sandown, deceased at the scene.

Speaking after the sentencing, Mr White’s wife, Lee, said, “Gerry’s family is relieved that the accused has admitted being ‘guilty of murder’. Heartfelt thanks to the police, prosecution, court staff, and all involved in the investigation and trial for their hard work in reaching this outcome.”

She added, “The tragic loss has left a huge hole in our lives that we can’t imagine ever healing. While nothing brings him back, we are grateful that justice has been served.”
