The new train named “Sir Edward Elgar” was officially launched this morning at Worcester Shrub Hill railway station. It is one of 26 advanced Class 196 trains joining West Midlands Railway’s fleet to enhance travel across the region.

West Midlands Railway managing director said: “I’m thrilled passengers from Hereford and Worcester will soon enjoy these brand-new trains. With smart air conditioning adapting to the carriage environment, this fleet offers a journey fit for this historic and beautiful part of central England and the Welsh Marches.”

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands, added: “More customers will soon benefit from these modern trains. Reliable rail services are essential to support our ambition for growth and prosperity across the region.”

The train is named in tribute to Sir Edward Elgar, one of Britain’s most famous composers, known for the Pomp and Circumstance Marches and Enigma Variations. Born in 1857 in nearby Lower Broadheath, he spent much of his life in Worcestershire. The unveiling was conducted by Worcestershire’s High Sheriff, Andrew Manning-Cox, in front of special guests and passenger groups at Shrub Hill station.

The Class 196 fleet will begin service later this year on the Leamington to Nuneaton route, which includes stops at Coventry, Kenilworth, and Bedworth. Passengers can expect several improvements including more seats and tables with improved under-seat storage, enhanced accessibility with at least one accessible toilet per train, and space for up to three bicycles thanks to extra bicycle storage.

Additional features include clear luggage racks to help prevent lost items, smart digital screens providing up-to-date journey information, plug and USB sockets at every seat, intelligent air conditioning that adapts to conditions, and free WiFi throughout the journey.
