Emergency crews responded swiftly to a serious bus crash in South Norwood on the evening of June 5. The incident occurred on Portland Road, SE25, where a bus struck a low railway bridge near Norwood Junction, resulting in the roof being ripped off the vehicle.

The collision raised immediate concerns about passengers potentially being trapped inside the damaged bus. London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, and the Metropolitan Police all arrived promptly at the scene following the first emergency calls.

A persons trapped alert remains active, although it is not yet confirmed if anyone remains inside the wrecked bus. The London Fire Brigade deployed multiple fire engines, including rescue teams equipped with specialist gear to handle possible entrapments. The London Ambulance Service is treating casualties on site, supported by their Hazardous Area Response Team.

Police have secured the area, cordoning off the crash site and redirecting traffic to manage the disruption. Local bus routes have been diverted, and train services on nearby lines are experiencing potential delays due to the incident.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported seeing the bus roof shredded beneath the bridge, with debris scattered across the roadway. Emergency workers are operating under bright floodlights to manage the situation safely.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said, “Emergency services are at a serious road traffic collision on Portland Road, SE25, where a bus has struck a low bridge. Investigations are ongoing to establish if anyone is trapped inside.”

The police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw the collision or has dashcam footage is urged to contact police on 101, quoting the CAD number, or to report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
