Monster Rapist Sentenced to Life for Horrific Sex Attacks and Murder
Aman Vyas, 36, has been handed a life sentence for a chilling spree of rapes that ended with the brutal murder of Michelle Samaraweera.
The no fixed address predator was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on 20 August, with a minimum term set at 37 years minus time served in custody in both England and India. His custodial term to serve is just under 35 years.
Four Women Attacked in Walthamstow Terror Spree
- Vyas raped and violently attacked three women between March and May 2009 in Walthamstow.
- The horrifying rampage ended with the murder of Michelle, 35, whose strangled and sexually assaulted body was found in a local park.
- Each attack left devastating injuries — one victim spent over a month in hospital recovering from broken bones and a head wound.
The sentences for rape and grievous bodily harm – ranging from 14 to 18-and-a-half years – will run concurrently with his life term for murder.
DNA Breakthrough and Manhunt After Decade-Long Hunt
The brutal crimes stumped police for years. Partial DNA evidence initially failed to catch the killer as Vyas wasn’t on the database. After an intense forensic review, full DNA linked him conclusively to all the offences.
A massive investigation saw 1,815 addresses visited and over 1,100 DNA samples taken. Over 60,000 posters featuring suspect images were circulated.
A breakthrough came when a former employer recognised Vyas from CCTV images and tipped off police, which led to his arrest in India in 2011. He was extradited to the UK in 2019 and finally brought to justice.
Victims’ Families Demand Justice
Michelle’s sister Ann said: “Aman Vyas had over 11 years to confess to raping and murdering my sister and the other heinous crimes. Instead, he lied. He has no idea the pain he caused my family and friends.
“My daughter still has the blanket Michelle gave her, sleeping with it every day. Just before my daughter’s first birthday, I was making party chains, and the next day we found Michelle dead in a playground.
“I hope one day Vyas truly realises the pain he inflicted. For the victims, life in prison is a privilege, not a punishment – and it will never be enough.”
Police Praise Victims’ Bravery and Public Support
Detective Sergeant Shaleena Sheikh said: “This long sentence reflects the cruelty and depravity of Vyas’s crimes. He preyed on women and fled to India to evade justice.
“Thanks to the bravery of victims, families and public assistance, we eventually caught him. The investigation was complex and spanned over a decade and several countries.
“We hope today brings some peace to the victims and their families. The Met stands firm in supporting victims of sexual and violent crimes and prosecuting offenders.”
