New Year’s Eve heroes aren’t always grown-ups! In Lakenheath, three plucky kids pulled off a life-saving rescue that left everyone stunned.
Kids Spot Danger by the Riverbank
Jacob MacLeod and Patrick Kroszkiewicz, both just 10, teamed up with 14-year-old Poppy James while playing near the muddy riverbank. Their quick eyes caught sight of an unconscious man lying helplessly nearby. They didn’t hesitate for a second.
Storming to nearby adults, the trio raised the alarm, triggering a rapid 999 call. Emergency services arrived within minutes, thanks to their swift action.
Guiding Paramedics Through Treacherous Terrain
The ambulance crew from East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust faced a challenging rescue. The steep, slippery riverbank made reaching the man tough. But young Jacob expertly helped medics find the exact spot.
Though the man was breathing, he needed urgent help. Specialists from the Hazardous Area Response Team rolled in with a 4×4, safely retrieving him and rushing him to the hospital.
Bravery Awards for Little Lifesavers
The ambulance service honoured Jacob, Patrick, and Poppy with bravery awards. Their teamwork, sharp thinking, and calmness under pressure earned praise. Poppy’s mum credits school fire brigade training for her cool head, while Jacob’s mum lauds his focus in a crisis.
“They played a vital role in getting urgent help to someone who desperately needed it,” said EEAST leaders.
This incredible rescue proves you don’t need a cape to be a hero — just courage and quick thinking.
