Emergency services shut down Canterbury Road in East London’s E10 area earlier this week after a live World War II bomb was found. The discovery of the unexploded ordnance forced the closure of nearby junctions with Epsom Road and Chesterfield Road, causing significant disruption in the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
The bomb was uncovered in a cupboard beneath the stairs of a home on Canterbury Road, shocking the local community. A neighbour described the find as “shocking and unusual” on social media, with many residents wondering how a decades-old bomb remained hidden for so long.
Bomb disposal experts quickly arrived at the scene to assess and safely defuse the device. After the bomb was neutralised, authorities lifted the road closures and normal traffic flow resumed in the area.
Residents expressed relief and amazement at the rare discovery on social media. One local commented, “Glad everyone is safe,” while others reflected on London’s wartime history and the hidden dangers that still exist beneath the city.
The London Borough of Waltham Forest thanked the public for their patience during the incident and confirmed that all roads have now reopened.
