Tragedy struck at Camber Sands beach on August 24 when three people died and a fourth was left in critical condition after a water rescue operation.

At around 2.15pm, the UK Coastguard received a distress call reporting three individuals urgently needing medical assistance. Emergency response teams acted quickly to the situation.

Rescue helicopters from Lydd and Lee-on-Solent were scrambled immediately, while Dungeness and 1 Bay Coastguard Rescue Teams were dispatched to the scene. The Rye Harbour RNLI lifeboat was also launched to assist in the rescue efforts.

A Senior Coastal Operations Officer oversaw the rescue operation, and an air ambulance was rushed to Camber Sands to provide urgent medical support.

All victims were airlifted to hospital by the Air 1 helicopter. Despite the best efforts of medical teams, three victims later died. One person remains in critical condition and is fighting for their life.

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
