A passenger train has derailed in Switzerland after an avalanche smashed into the tracks, leaving around 80 people on board facing danger.
Avalanche Hits Train Near Goppenstein
The BLS service left Spiez at 6:12am and was bound for Brig when disaster struck near Goppenstein in the Valais region at about 7am. A sudden avalanche crashed onto the railway, causing the train to derail.
Rescue Operation in Full Swing as Injuries Feared
A BLS spokesperson told 20 Minuten that passengers “will be evacuated shortly.” Local police warned injuries are “likely” and have launched an immediate emergency response. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) confirmed the line is shut down and won’t reopen until at least 4am Tuesday, causing major disruptions.
Second Avalanche Rocks Region This Week
This comes just days after another avalanche blasted the nearby Lötschental valley. Authorities called that event “extreme.” Luckily, it caused no injuries or vehicle damage but temporarily cut off the area.
