UK Braces for Beastly Storm Chandra: Snow, Wind, Floods

Snow Hits Hard with Up to 8 Inches Forecast

The UK is in for a savage weather hit as Storm Chandra smashes in with heavy snow, savage winds, and widespread chaos on the roads. Snow lovers might be excited, but for most, the forecast is trouble—up to eight inches (20cm) of snow could pile up in highland areas today.

Freezing temperatures will soon turn rain to snow overnight, blanketing the Pennines, southern Scotland, and the Highlands. The Met Office warns that 10-20cm could fall within hours, making travel near impossible in some spots.

Amber and Yellow Warnings Flash Nationwide

  • Amber rain warning hits South West England tonight through Tuesday—Devon, Dorset, Somerset, and Cornwall face 30-50mm rain, with Dartmoor seeing up to 80mm.
  • Yellow rain alerts extend across the East Midlands, North East and North West England, West Midlands, and Yorkshire where rain and snow clash.
  • Amber wind warning covers eastern Northern Ireland with gusts up to 70mph today.
  • Yellow wind warnings roar across Cornwall, southwest Wales, northern Devon, and southwestern Scotland with coasts battered by 75mph gusts.

Travel Chaos and Flood Fears Ramp Up

Storm Chandra follows hot on the heels of Storms Goretti and Ingrid, delivering yet more wild weather. Torrential rain will flood already soaked ground, raising fresh fears of flooding and power blackouts across vulnerable regions.

The storm will hit the Isles of Scilly, western Cornwall, and southwest Wales first before barreling north up the Irish Sea. Eastern Northern Ireland faces the fiercest winds.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Paul Gundersen said: “Gusts of 70 to 80mph are possible in the south west, with heavy rain leading to flooding on saturated ground. Snowfall of 10-20cm will hit higher grounds in the north and Scotland.”

How to Stay Safe and Prepared

  • Expect treacherous driving conditions, especially in highlands and exposed roads.
  • Watch for floods that could isolate towns—stay updated on local alerts.
  • Power cuts likely as gale-force winds pound coastal areas.
  • Keep tabs on Met Office warnings and rethink travel plans during the storm.

Storm Chandra is the UK’s third major blow this month, promising serious disruption before easing midweek. Stay safe and stay informed.
