Revolutionary Sound Wave Treatment Takes on Prostate Cancer – With Fewer Side Effects
A cutting-edge sound wave therapy at Southampton’s university hospitals is shaking up prostate cancer treatment. The High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) procedure could rival surgery and radiotherapy for effectiveness – but with a far kinder side effect profile.
Sound Waves Zap Tumours, Spare Healthy Tissue
Consultant urological surgeon Tim Dudderidge is part of an elite team at Southampton General Hospital delivering HIFU to NHS patients. This groundbreaking procedure targets tumours in the prostate with high-frequency sound waves, heating cancer cells to 80-100°C while leaving surrounding healthy tissue untouched.
Better still, patients walk out the same day – no overnight stays needed. Unlike traditional treatments, which remove the entire prostate or blast it with radiation, HIFU promises fewer nasty after-effects like incontinence or impotence.
Stunning Study Shows 93% Cancer-Free After Five Years
A major study from University College Hospital tracked 625 men with localized prostate tumours between 2004 and 2015, including 50 from Southampton. Presented by UCH surgeon Mr Hashim Ahmed at a European urology meeting, the results stunned experts: 93% of men treated with HIFU alone stayed cancer-free for five years, needing no additional surgery or radiotherapy.
- Only 1-2% suffered long-term urinary incontinence – far lower than the 10-20% rate after surgery or radiotherapy.
- Just 15% reported erectile dysfunction versus 30-60% after traditional treatments.
Hope for Thousands of Men in the UK
Prostate cancer mainly strikes men over 50, with around 37,000 new UK cases every year. Mr Dudderidge, who co-authored the study, said: “The results are impressive and could transform prostate cancer treatment for many men.”
He added: “For men caught early through PSA blood tests, this targeted therapy might be just as effective as surgery or radiotherapy but with far fewer side effects.”
Now, Southampton is teaming up with four other UK centres on a bigger study called PART. This trial will compare MRI-guided HIFU partial ablation directly against radical prostate removal to see if sound wave treatment can become the new prostate cancer standard.
This could be a game-changer for thousands of men, offering a powerful weapon against cancer that won’t wreck their quality of life.
