The UK is bracing for a frosty blast this weekend as temperatures nosedive to a chilly 5C. Heavy snowstorms will sweep across the country, sparking travel chaos from Derby all the way to Scotland. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice, so expect slippery roads and disrupted journeys.

Snow Smashes High Ground – Up to 15cm Forecast

Highlands and elevated areas face the brunt of the snowfall, with up to six inches (15cm) piling up overnight. Even lower regions won’t escape unscathed, receiving a dusting of 1-3cm. Between 150m and 400m elevation, snow will range from 3cm to a hefty 15cm, turning roads treacherous.

Northern Ireland isn’t off the hook either. A yellow warning kicks in at 5pm Saturday until 10pm, with 2-4cm expected above 200m. Hotspots like the Glenshane Pass will be particularly tricky.

Freezing Rain Threatens Black Ice Mayhem

After a dry and sunny Saturday, conditions take a nasty turn. Snowfall will ease but be replaced by rain at lower levels. However, freezing rain will strike in patches, creating deadly black ice.

Met Office forecaster Dan Stroud warned: “Skies will turn hazy from the west this afternoon, pushing east overnight. Rain, sleet and snow will continue spreading eastwards on Sunday morning.”

Sunday will see heavy showers drenching Northern Ireland and northern England by midday, followed by blustery showers and occasional sunny breaks.

Flood Warnings Pile Up Amid Relentless Rain

This snowy blast arrives during one of the UK’s wettest spells this year. Some regions have been battered by rain for over 40 days straight. The result? An alarming 77 flood warnings and 160 alerts remain in place nationwide.

The culprit is a stubborn jet stream stuck further south than usual, funneling constant heavy rain and low-pressure systems over the UK. Meanwhile, a high-pressure zone over northern Europe locks the soggy weather in place.

Get Ready: Brace for a Nasty Weekend

Snow, freezing rain, icy roads, and flood threats make this weekend a dangerous mix. Brits are urged to keep updated, travel with extreme caution, and wrap up warm. Don’t let the cold catch you out!
