Chaos in Moria: Greek PM Slams Violence Amid Covid Strain
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has hit out after violent unrest erupted at the Moria refugee camp on Lesvos. The PM expressed deep sadness but warned the chaos cannot continue.
State of Emergency Declared on Lesvos
“There can be no excuse for the violent backlash against Covid health checks,” Mitsotakis said. In response, a state of emergency has been declared across the entire island, with all national resources deployed to restore order.

- Migrants who test positive for Covid-19 will get full medical care
- Local residents will be fully protected and compensated
- Strict travel bans for migrants from leaving the island have been introduced
European Cooperation in the Spotlight
The PM revealed he has informed European authorities, stressing migration is a Europe-wide challenge. “Greece has carried more than its fair share of this burden,” he said.
Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, is set to visit Lesvos imminently. Mitsotakis will meet him to discuss next steps and support.

The Greek government vows to use this crisis as an opportunity. “We will deliver better conditions and a new reality in Lesvos,” Mitsotakis declared.
