Age slows your immune system, making COVID-19 hit harder and stick around longer. This means a higher risk of severe illness and hospital stays for older adults.
Who’s Urged to Get the Free NHS COVID Jab?
- Adults aged 75 and over
- Residents in care homes for older people
- Anyone aged 6 months or older with a weakened immune system
GP Dr Tehseen Khan warns, “Getting your free NHS spring COVID-19 vaccine is one of the best shields you’ve got. It cuts the chance of serious illness, speeds up recovery, and slashes your risk of hospital treatment.”
Dr Oge Ilozue adds, “If your immune system is shot—because of blood cancer, HIV, chemo, steroids, or transplant meds—you’re more vulnerable. The free NHS COVID jab boosts your protection, lowers severe illness risk, and helps you recover faster.”
Myth Busted: The Jab Can’t Give You COVID
Worried the vaccine might infect you? Don’t be. Dr Khan explains, “COVID vaccines contain no live virus. They cannot give you COVID. They just train your immune system to fight off the real virus.”
Remember, it takes up to two weeks for full protection. Catch COVID during this window, and you could still get sick.
Side Effects: What to Expect
Some people get flu-like symptoms—body aches, mild fever. This means your body is making antibodies. Serious reactions like allergic shock are extremely rare and treated immediately.
There have been very rare cases of heart inflammation (myocarditis), but most recover quickly with rest and simple care, says Dr Ilozue.
Still Unsure? Talk to a Specialist
Dr Khan urges, “These jabs have been rigorously tested and monitored. The benefits far outweigh the risks. If you’re worried, chat with your GP, nurse, pharmacist or consultant—they can answer your questions with facts.”
