Missile Madness in Hokkaido: Sirens Rage as North Korea Fires Again

Residents of Hokkaido were thrown into chaos as loud sirens blared across the region, urging everyone to “evacuate immediately.” The cold tension stems from a suspected North Korean missile launch—the second scare in less than a year for northern Japan.

Missile Flies 1,000 Kilometres but Japan Escapes Damage

Japanese authorities later confirmed the missile did not land near the island and swiftly cancelled the alert. Still, nerves remain frayed. This year alone, North Korea has launched a whopping 27 missiles, with Thursday’s projectile flying roughly 1,000 kilometres (620 miles). South Korea labelled the move a “grave provocation.”

The missile, believed to have medium or longer range, landed in waters east of North Korea but whether it flew over Japan’s exclusive economic zone remains unconfirmed. The fallout was immediate: schools in Hokkaido delayed start times, and some train services halted.

Japan and US Sound Alarm Over North Korea’s Threat

Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi blasted Pyongyang’s relentless launches as a “grave and imminent threat” to national security. The US National Security Council’s Adrienne Watson echoed the warning, saying the missile “needlessly raises tensions and risks destabilising the region.”

Kim Jong Un’s Military on “Offensive” Mode

This missile launch comes just days after Kim Jong Un ordered his forces to ramp up a “more practical and offensive” stance on war deterrence, according to North Korea’s KCNA state news agency.

Adding to worries, North Korea has ignored twice-daily peace hotline calls from South Korea for a week, shutting down vital communication intended to prevent border clashes.

“Pyongyang’s provocations continue beyond its protest of US-South Korean defence exercises,” explained Prof. Leif-Eric Easley from Ewha University. “Kim Jong-un hasn’t finished demonstrating his nuclear delivery capabilities yet. Without hotline talks and diplomacy, the risk of unintended escalation grows.”
