A brand-new bus service is set to transform travel across Sussex from next year. Launching on 9 May 2026, Route 500 will offer a direct, round-the-clock bus link between Eastbourne and Gatwick Airport, stopping at important towns along the route.
Direct Route Through Sussex Towns
Route 500 will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with buses running every hour. The service will connect Eastbourne with Gatwick Airport via Willingdon, Hailsham, East Hoathly, Halland, Uckfield, Maresfield, Forest Row, East Grinstead, Copthorne, and the Manor Royal Business District.
This new route replaces the existing routes 54 (Eastbourne to Uckfield) and 261 (Uckfield to East Grinstead), offering a faster and more straightforward connection, particularly between East Grinstead and Gatwick Airport.
Cheap Fares and Major Benefits
The adult fare for Route 500 will be capped at just £3. Concessionary passes will be accepted on the service at all times. With 24/7 operation every day of the week, the route aims to provide a reliable and affordable travel option for a wide range of passengers.
Nick Hill, Commercial Director at Metrobus, described the route as a “major step forward” for connectivity in Sussex. He said it offers a dependable and cost-effective choice for workers, residents, and travellers, improving access to employment, education, and the airport.
“This is a huge boost for Sussex, delivering a bus service passengers can rely on anytime,” said Nick Hill.
Gatwick Backs New 24/7 Service
Jonathan Pollard, Chief Commercial Officer at London Gatwick, welcomed the launch of Route 500 as the airport’s eighth 24-hour bus connection. He highlighted the service as a positive development for sustainable travel and stronger links across East and West Sussex.
“We are delighted to partner on this. It makes life easier for airport staff and passengers travelling across the region,” said Jonathan Pollard.
