Rail Chaos Hits UK on July 27 as RMT Strike Brings Travel Mayhem
Network Rail and UK train operators face a massive strike on Wednesday, July 27. The result? Barely any trains running, major delays, and packed carriages.
Minimal Service, Major Disruption South of London
- Most lines south of London will be completely shut down.
- Trains will start late, from 7:30am or later, and stop early – some as soon as 4:30pm.
- Expect overcrowding, especially on the last trains of the day.
- Check first and last train times for your station before travelling.
Next Day Service Still Shaky
On Thursday, July 28, services will kick off around 7:15am but with a modified timetable. Morning trains will be heaving, so passengers are urged to travel later where possible and plan ahead carefully.
- Southern, Great Northern, and Thameslink lines will run a limited service.
- The 1 Express won’t operate, with only patchy Southern and Thameslink trains to the airport.

Official Warnings & Apologies as Strike Rumblings Continue
Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) Chief Operating Officer Angie Doll warned:
“We must again ask people to travel only if absolutely necessary on Wednesday, July 27th, due to RMT strike action. Some routes will be closed, and services will start late and finish early. Expect extremely crowded trains and possible delays. Please plan your journey and consider travelling at a different time.”
She added the hope that negotiations will swiftly resolve the disruption.
Network Rail CEO Andrew Haines also apologised for the disruption:
“This pointless strike will cause huge inconvenience, especially for those travelling for holidays or major events like the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 semi-final and the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. We ask passengers to only make necessary trips and adjust their plans.”
