Medway Local Policing Team joined forces with the Roads Safety Unit, Medway Council, and VOSA on March 9, 2023, to carry out a significant crackdown on illegal waste transfers, fly-tipping, dangerous driving, and unroadworthy vehicles.
During the operation, officers conducted 90 stop checks along Ambley Road. The results included the seizure of three uninsured vehicles and the revocation of one driver’s licence after failing a roadside eye test. Additionally, ten drivers received Traffic Offence Reports (TORs) for offences such as driving without an MOT or tax, illegal window tints, bald tyres, and using dodgy numberplates.
Two drivers were issued Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme (VDRS) notices, requiring them to repair their faulty vehicles and have them re-tested within a strict deadline.
Medway Council’s Environmental Enforcement Officers engaged with several motorists regarding waste carrier licences and launched an investigation into one suspect linked to illegal waste activities.
Sergeant James Callaghan stated: “By cracking down on unsafe vehicles and dangerous drivers, we’re making Medway’s roads safer. What looks like minor defects or mods can cause serious accidents when combined with reckless driving. Illegal waste carrying often links to fly-tipping, harming our environment and rural communities. We work regularly with partners to catch offenders – and they will be prosecuted.”
Residents are reminded that anyone seeking to have waste removed must use a licensed waste carrier or risk facing fines. The list of authorised waste carriers can be checked on the Environment Agency’s website.
If you have information about waste crimes or traffic violations, you are encouraged to report it at www.kent.police.uk/report, via Crimestoppers online, or by calling 0800 555 111.
