A man was in trouble in the water near Farlington Marshes when lifesavers from Portsmouth RNLI swooped in to help. The incident occurred about one mile offshore in Langstone Harbour after the man’s small sailing dinghy encountered difficulties.

A dramatic video shows the rescue helicopter and lifeboat crew racing to the scene following a 999 call received at 7.35pm. The Coastguard was alerted to the dinghy in distress, prompting a rapid volunteer response from Portsmouth RNLI.

“While on approach, we were told the dinghy was struggling and the man ended up in the water,” said a Portsmouth RNLI spokesman.

Rescuers faced challenges reaching the man due to low tide conditions, but he managed to wade through the water to safety. Crews onshore met him alongside the South Central Ambulance Service, who checked his condition.

The RNLI crew later retrieved the unmanned dinghy, which had floated away from the scene.

“Always check the weather conditions before heading out, especially at sea,” the RNLI spokesman warned. “If you get into trouble, call for help immediately. You can find safety tips and advice for watersports on the RNLI website.”

Portsmouth RNLI volunteers regularly respond to emergencies in the Forth, saving lives at sea.

Local residents praised the lifesaving heroes. One said, “Could have ended badly without you. Well done, be proud.” Another added, “You guys are totally amazing. Thanks for all you do.” A third commented, “Professional job done as always.”
