Major Kayaker Search Launched on Isle of Wight’s River Medina

A major emergency search was launched late on Friday night after reports of a lone kayaker in distress on the River Medina. Three Coastguard Search and Rescue teams from across the Isle of Wight sprang into action, joined by the Cowes RNLI Inshore Lifeboat crew.

Kayaker Reported Missing After Distress Call

The alarm was raised just before 11pm on Friday (6th April 2018) following reports of a kayaker in a red kayak in trouble on the River Medina. Rescue volunteers began scouring both land and river for the missing person.

Search teams found a set of footprints in the mud near the Vestas Offshore Wind headquarters at Stag Lane. Coastguard officers and lifeboat crew swiftly launched a coordinated foot search in the area.

Search Expands Amid Conflicting Incidents

Despite a rigorous land and sea search lasting over two hours, rescuers were stood down briefly by the Coastguard control centre in Fareham around midnight. However, at 2am Saturday, new developments threw a fresh twist on the operation.

A spokesman for the UK Coastguard confirmed a second incident was unfolding. Lifeboats were relaunched after security staff at the Foley Inn found a wet yellow horseshoe man-overboard lifejacket attached to a fence, with footprints leading from the water.

Coastguard officers from the Needles team were redeployed to the Foley Inn and nearby Whippenham shorelines for further searches. Reports also emerged of a distress whistle blowing repeatedly in the area — heightening fears for the missing kayaker’s safety.

Intensive Land and River Searches Continue

  • Foot searches led by Coastguard teams continue in Stag Lane Newport, Foley Inn, and Whippenham
  • Rescuers call on public vigilance as the search remains ongoing into the early hours

No sign of the kayaker has yet been found despite extensive efforts. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.
