Chaos erupted on the M25 in Surrey on the evening of Friday, August 30, 2024, after a vehicle suddenly exploded into a fiery ball on a live lane near Stoke D’Abernon, Cobham. The dramatic blaze triggered a massive emergency response just after 10 p.m.
Three Surrey Fire and Rescue engines raced to the scene to tackle the roaring vehicle fire. Amid the chaos, a multi-vehicle collision broke out nearby involving a mobile HGV crane, a van, and a caravan. Emergency crews were stretched as they dealt with both incidents simultaneously.
Amazingly, no one suffered serious injuries in either the fiery explosion or the crash. However, several drivers remained trapped amid the road closures, and the situation stayed critical.
Surrey Police joined fire crews to investigate the cause of the explosive blaze. National Highways officers were on hand, managing traffic and working to free trapped motorists. The M25 was expected to remain closed for hours as investigations and clean-up continued.
Drivers were urged to remain patient, stay inside their vehicles, and seek alternative routes if travelling near Cobham. Severe delays were anticipated as emergency teams worked to bring the incident on the M25 to a safe and speedy conclusion.
