A horrific multi-vehicle crash has shut the M1 motorway in Bedfordshire, leaving five people seriously injured and fighting for their lives. The closure affects the stretch between Milton Keynes and Luton following an early morning pile-up.
One man in his twenties is in critical condition at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington after suffering a severe head injury. The crash occurred just after 2.30am, prompting a significant emergency response.
The M1 remains closed between Junction 12 (Flitwick/Woburn) and Junction 13 (Bedford) as police continue their investigation. The closure is expected to last well into Christmas Eve morning, causing major travel disruption on one of the busiest routes in the Anglia region.
Signed diversions are in place, but drivers should expect substantial delays. Those travelling to Luton Airport are advised to allow plenty of extra time. London-bound traffic is recommended to use the A14 and A1, while motorists heading towards the Midlands should consider the M40 route.
The East of England Ambulance Service and Magpas Air Ambulance attended the scene, underlining the severity of the incident. Police have urged motorists to avoid the area if possible and to plan alternative routes to minimise delays.
