Over 50 teachers from primary and secondary schools across the Isle of Wight gathered at Westridge Community Learning Centre to boost pupil support on personal development, behaviour, and welfare.
Island Schools Get Serious on Pupils’ Wellbeing
The event, run by the Isle of Wight council’s public health team and Learning and Development Service, aimed to equip teachers with fresh, practical tools that meet new OFSTED guidelines. These resources are designed to help tackle personal development and behaviour issues head-on.
New Approaches to Boost Health and Wellbeing
Teachers explored evidence-based strategies to weave health, wellbeing, and even ADHD treatment into everyday classroom life. Workshops covered hot topics like substance misuse, sexual health, gender identity, mental health, and physical activity.
Experts and Officials Praise the Initiative
“I’m incredibly proud of the teachers and public health professionals involved,” said Cllr Jonathan Bacon, Cabinet member for children’s services. “This conference will help Island teachers support their pupils better and highlight how personal development impacts educational success.”
Gilles Bergeron, senior public health practitioner and organiser, added: “It was fantastic to see so many teachers come together to share ideas. We hope this sparks fresh ways to approach these vital topics back in the classroom.”
Delegates heard from top experts like Eleanor Bell from the Isle of Wight council and Susan Koffler-Sluijter from Public Health England’s Child and Maternal Health Intelligence Network.
