The Isle of Wight Council, in partnership with Island Roads, is set to begin two significant footpath improvement projects in Seaview and Gunville starting 29 February.

Seaview Footpath Overhaul: Safer Walks Ahead

Work will commence on Bullen Road, between Pondwell Close and Gregory Avenue, and is expected to last around four weeks. To ensure the safety of local residents, temporary traffic lights and barriers will be in place for three weeks. Additionally, a full road closure will occur for a few days to facilitate tree felling.

During the road closures, drivers will be diverted via Marlborough Road, Appley Road, and Calthorpe Road. The upgrade includes constructing a new footway connecting Pondwell Close to Gregory Avenue, along with traffic calming measures designed to slow down vehicles.

It is important to note that the existing tree at the corner of Pondwell Close and a hedge near Gregory Avenue will be removed to accommodate the improvements.

Gunville Gets Wider Zebra Crossing

On Gunville Road, Carisbrooke, work will proceed to replace the old, uncontrolled crossing with a wider zebra crossing. This project is scheduled to continue until the week ending 20 March.

Two-way temporary traffic signals will be used as the work shifts from one side of the road to the other. This approach aims to minimize disruption while maintaining traffic flow.

Council and Island Roads Promise Safer Streets

“These projects form part of our Local Transport Plan commitments,” said Councillor Phil Jordan, Isle of Wight Council Executive member for public protection and PFI. “We look forward to the safer traffic calming measures and enhanced footways once completed. Residents will soon enjoy safer roads.”

Kevin Burton, network manager at Island Roads, added: “We apologise for any inconvenience during the works but are confident the new safety upgrades will benefit pedestrians and drivers alike.”

With these upgrades, the Isle of Wight takes another step toward safer, smarter roads for all.
