Tragic Crash: Plane Vanishes Near Makassar with 11 Onboard

An Indonesia Air Transport turboprop plane has disappeared from radar and crashed near Makassar, South Sulawesi, killing all 11 people on board. The ATR 42-500 took off from Yogyakarta on a routine two-hour flight but lost contact just 12 miles from its destination.

Rescue Teams Race to Mountainside Crash Site

Wreckage from the downed plane was spotted scattered across a rugged mountainside. Rescue crews quickly mobilised to search for survivors amid the debris strewn on the remote Leang-Leang slopes.

“We have sent 60 search and rescue personnel to the coordinates in the Leang-Leang area,” said Andi Sultan, head of Makassar Basarnas Operations. “The first team of five is assessing the site, with 15 and 40 experts following for a full search and rescue mission.”

Air Traffic Control Battled to Regain Contact

The plane was reportedly off-course on approach to Makassar airport. Air traffic control repeatedly tried to correct its path, issuing several instructions to the pilot. After their last directive, all communication was lost and an emergency was declared.

Lukman F Laisa, Director General of Air Transport, added, “The plane’s low altitude over the ocean limited radar tracking. The final signal came at 11:20am local time, about 12 miles northeast of the airport.”

Indonesia’s Troubled Aviation Safety Record

The ill-fated aircraft, registered PK-THT, was operated by Indonesia Air Transport — a charter firm serving oil, gas, and government sectors. It was under a government contract for Marine and Fisheries surveillance.

Indonesia’s vast archipelago depends on air travel but has seen multiple deadly crashes recently. Just last September, two helicopter crashes in South Kalimantan and Papua killed ten people in separate incidents.

What Happens Next?

  • Search and rescue efforts continue with larger teams deployed on site.
