Hezbollah Claims Deadly Missile and Drone Strike on Northern Israel
Haifa Targeted in Retaliation for Khamenei’s Killing
Hezbollah has taken responsibility for a fierce missile and drone barrage launched at northern Israel on Monday evening. The Iran-backed militant group said the attacks specifically targeted Israeli military bases near Haifa.
In a bold statement circulated on messaging apps, Hezbollah called the strikes a “legitimate act of self-defence” to avenge Israel’s assassination of senior regional figures, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They also framed the operation as a show of solidarity with Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli military actions.
Tensions Explode After Khamenei’s Death
The deadly assault comes in the aftermath of the dramatic U.S.–Israeli airstrike that killed Khamenei in Tehran last weekend, confirmed by Iranian state media. His death has plunged the region into mourning and provoked fiery vows of revenge from Tehran and its allied militias.
Israel’s air defences sprang into action north of the country, intercepting several incoming missiles and drones. Emergency services remain on high alert, although no significant casualties have been reported so far.
Fear of a Wider Middle East War Grows
Hezbollah’s clear link between the attacks and Khamenei’s assassination signals a dangerous escalation that could drag the region deeper into conflict. The group had vowed to stand firm against U.S. and Israeli aggression following the Iranian leader’s death.
Experts warn this provocation raises the very real risk of a broader war involving multiple Middle Eastern powers — and possibly global players too.
