At 4.50pm, a dramatic emergency unfolded at Portland Bill when a woman was spotted struggling in the sea. The situation quickly escalated, prompting a massive rescue response from multiple agencies.

HM Coastguard, along with Wyke and Portland Coastguard Rescue Teams, rushed to the scene. RNLI lifeboats from Weymouth and Dorset Police also joined the search efforts. Additionally, a Coastguard rescue helicopter, a police helicopter, and the Helimed air ambulance were launched into action to assist in the rescue.

The woman was found trapped in a hard-to-reach cave below the cliffs, making the rescue particularly perilous. The courageous Coastguard helicopter crew swung into action and successfully plucked her to safety from the cliffside cave.

Once rescued, she was swiftly transferred to hospital by the South West Ambulance Service. The teamwork and quick thinking of all involved saved a life on Portland’s treacherous coast.
