Essa Suleiman, 45, a British national born in Somalia, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with three counts of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article following a knife attack in Golders Green, London. The violent spree included stabbing two Jewish men in the street and an earlier attack on a close friend in Southwark. The case is being treated as terrorism, with Counter Terrorism Policing leading the investigation.
Morning Attack In Southwark
The court heard that Suleiman attempted to kill his long-time friend Ishmail Hussein at his Southwark home around 7:50am. After repeatedly calling Hussein’s phone, Suleiman was buzzed inside and armed with a knife, he tried to stab Hussein in the upper body. Hussein managed to fend off the assault.
Knives Used At Golders Green
Later the same day, Suleiman travelled to Brent Cross underground before continuing to Golders Green. There he stabbed Mr Rand, who had been studying in a synagogue, puncturing his lung. The victim fled towards the synagogue with blood visible on his shirt. Shortly after, Suleiman stabbed Mr Shine at a bus stop on Golders Green Road while he adjusted his kippah.
Suspect’s Background Revealed
Police confirmed Suleiman has a history of violence and mental health issues. He was referred to the Prevent counter-extremism programme in 2020, but the case was closed the same year. Suleiman spoke only to confirm his identity in court and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on May 15.
Government Response
Prime Minister and Labour leader Keir Starmer condemned the attacks, describing them as “appalling” and “yet another vile, terrorist attack” on the Jewish community. The government raised the UK terror threat level to severe, meaning an attack is “highly likely”. An additional £25 million has been promised for increased police patrols and security at synagogues, schools and community centres across the UK.
