Essex Police are on high alert following social media rumours about the “Great British Fuel Protest” targeting the Thurrock-Kent route. The demonstrations are expected to begin this afternoon and could continue until April 17.
Authorities have reassured local residents that contingency plans are in place to manage any potential disruption caused by the protests.
The unrest is not confined to Essex alone. Social media posts indicate that the protests could spread to major UK routes including the M6, M5, and the busy Port of Felixstowe.
This planned action comes in the wake of last week’s slow-moving convoys and motorway blockages in Ireland, where hauliers, farmers, and agricultural workers united in protest.
The core issue driving the protests is the rising cost of fuel. Protesters are calling on the Government to take urgent action to reduce fuel prices, which they say have become unsustainable for many people.
Essex Police stated, “We are aware of posts on social media relating to potential protest activity and we have plans in place to deal with any disruption on our roads. Our priority is to keep Essex moving and we will deal robustly with anyone who puts the safety of other road users at risk.”
