Four NHS trusts across Kent and Surrey have slammed the emergency brakes, declaring critical incidents as hospitals buckle under soaring patient numbers. The latest surge follows warnings from Birmingham, Staffordshire, and Wales, where flu and norovirus cases are battering the NHS.
Winter Virus Wave Sparks Hospital Chaos
NHS Surrey Heartlands admits a spike in flu and norovirus, combined with rising staff sickness, has pushed hospitals to breaking point. A chilly snap has also forced vulnerable patients into already packed wards. The crisis hits three major Surrey trusts hard: Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.
East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust has declared a critical incident at Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate. The trust warned:
“Beds across our hospitals are full and emergency departments are stretched to breaking point. We have very limited capacity to admit more patients needing acute care.”
Critical Alerts Spread Across England and Wales
The emergency is not limited to Kent and Surrey. Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in southeast Wales reports “sustained pressure” amid a sharp rise in norovirus cases across Gwent.
Last Thursday, trusts in the Midlands and Wales, including University Hospitals of North Midlands, University Hospitals Birmingham, and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, sounded the alarm over historic demand. This wave of critical incidents is sweeping multiple regions, straining the NHS.
Festive Season Fuels Virus Resurgence
NHS England links the sharp uptick in winter illnesses to Christmas and New Year get-togethers. Hospital flu admissions averaged 2,924 daily in the week ending 4 January — a 9% jump from the prior week, reversing a mid-December fall.
Hospital bed occupancy in England soared by nearly 5%, hitting a claustrophobic 92%. Ambulance crews face long delays, with many patients left waiting outside hospital doors for over half an hour.
What Does a Critical Incident Mean?
Declaring a critical incident signals that NHS resources are stretched to the limit. Trusts scramble to prioritise urgent care and manage dwindling capacity, trying to keep patient safety intact amid chaos.
The Trusts Under Pressure
- Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust: Runs Royal Surrey County Hospital and various community centres.
- Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust: Manages Epsom and St Helier Hospitals.
- Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust: Oversees East Surrey Hospital and local community sites.
- East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust: Covers Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital and others.
With winter viruses still raging and staff shortages biting hard, NHS bosses warn the pressure cooker scenario is far from over.
