Four people were hospitalised after a carbon monoxide (CO) scare in a London flat. Firefighters rushed to the scene following reports of possible CO exposure and conducted a thorough sweep of the flat and communal areas using specialist gear. Thankfully, no dangerous levels of carbon monoxide were detected.
As a precaution, a man, a woman, and two children were taken to hospital for checks. A spokesperson from London Fire Brigade highlighted the deadly nature of carbon monoxide, stating: “You can’t taste, see or smell CO fumes, but it can kill in minutes.”
The Brigade urged all residents to install carbon monoxide alarms in rooms with fuel-burning appliances. They emphasised that alarms should be loud enough to wake people while they are sleeping. Additionally, recognising the symptoms of CO poisoning is crucial. These symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, breathlessness, and collapse or loss of consciousness.
It is important to note that these symptoms can mimic common illnesses and may also affect pets.
The emergency call was received at 12:09 pm, and the Brigade left the scene by 2:16 pm. The response involved one fire engine from Hendon Fire Station and a fire rescue unit from 1 Fire Station.
London Fire Brigade reminds the public that fitting CO alarms and being aware of poisoning symptoms can save lives. If carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected, seek medical help immediately.
