Teenager’s Quick Thinking Halts Kitchen Blaze
A fire damaged part of the kitchen in an end-of-terrace house last night. Thankfully, a teenage boy and a young child escaped before firefighters arrived, and no one was hurt.
Toaster on Cube Adaptor Sparks Fire
The blaze is believed to have started when a toaster was plugged into a cube adaptor, leading to an electrical fire. Fire crews were called to the scene at 7.45pm and had the fire under control by 8.10pm.
Firefighter Praises Hero Teen
Station Officer Tom Robinson said: “The teenager’s actions were fantastic – he closed the door, got the younger child out of the house and called 999.”
“It could have been a very different outcome without his quick thinking. The damage was limited to the kitchen.”
Experts Warn Against Overloaded Sockets
Robinson added: “Overloaded sockets are one of the leading causes of electrical fires. We advise against using adaptors or extension leads in the kitchen – usually, there are enough plug sockets to avoid them.”

- Water near electricals increases fire risk.
- Use fused ‘inline’ extension leads and buy quality adaptors from trusted suppliers.
Two fire engines and around 10 firefighters from Edmonton and Southgate stations attended the blaze, ensuring it was swiftly put out.
