Educating Yorkshire is set to return to Channel 4 next year, bringing renewed attention to Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury. The popular fly-on-the-wall documentary series first captured viewers’ hearts in 2014 with memorable classroom moments, such as Mr Burton helping a pupil overcome his stammer.
This time, the series showcases significant changes at Thornhill. Mr Burton has transitioned from teaching English to becoming the headteacher, taking over from Mr Mitchell. The school also introduces a new team of staff members, promising fresh stories filled with drama and inspiration.
“Our values – work hard and be nice – are at the centre of all we do,” said Mr Burton. “I have no doubt viewers will see those come to life in our brilliant community.”
The new series addresses some of the most pressing issues facing British schools today. Viewers can expect to see discussions around mobile phone use in classrooms, the national school attendance crisis, rising levels of teenage anxiety, and intense exam pressure. The show also highlights the impact of the teacher recruitment crisis, noting that nearly a third of teachers leave the profession within five years.
Channel 4 commissioning editor Rita Daniels expressed enthusiasm about the series’ return: “Telling the complex story of young people in Britain in 2025 is crucial. Seeing Mr Burton take charge at Thornhill is fantastic. So much has changed since we filmed last – social media, COVID, and the pressure for results. This will be fascinating viewing.”
Produced by Twofour, part of ITV Studios, Educating Yorkshire features Yorkshire-based talent both on screen and behind the camera. The show remains true to its roots by capturing the spirit and challenges of the local community it serves.
Stay tuned to Channel 4 for the latest updates and exclusive insights as Educating Yorkshire prepares for its highly anticipated comeback.
