A brave group of construction workers in Maryland saved the life of a freezing stray terrier by building her an insulated shelter right by the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
The black-and-white dog, later named Susan Badger, was found shivering near their worksite in January, battling brutal winter storms and dodging speeding traffic.
The workers used spare materials from the construction site to build Susan a snug survival den. They lined it with blankets, kept fresh water and food nearby, and even tossed her sandwich scraps and doughnut pieces to sustain the wary dog, despite her fear keeping her from being caught.
“They realized she was living alone and struggling to survive,” reports say. The improvised shelter was a lifesaver when a nine-inch snowstorm hit the region. Thanks to their quick thinking, Susan endured freezing nights that would have otherwise killed her.
After months on the run, driver Rob Mark spotted Susan by the roadside on March 26. His wife Jill-Ann’s online post sparked the rescue, with Donna Darling and Lexy Sweno trapping Susan using fried chicken the next day.
The couple adopted her from Anne Arundel County Animal Services, despite her initial skittish behaviour. “Both of us looked at each other like, ‘Well, I think this is a done deal,’” Jill-Ann recalled.
Now living comfortably in Ellicott City, Susan is thriving. She spends her days snacking, cuddling, and demanding affection with gentle headbutts. Jill-Ann says, “The degree to which she has made herself comfortable is both heartwarming and hilarious, because she just is already queen.”
The workers’ survival den will be reused to help other animals in need across the area. Their kindness created a lasting legacy, saving Susan Badger and inspiring more lifesaving action for stray animals facing harsh conditions.
