Kyle Bevan, a convicted child killer serving a life sentence at the maximum-security HMP Wakefield, was fatally stabbed 25 times in a violent attack inside his prison cell last November.
Leeds Crown Court heard that fellow inmates Lee Newell, Mark Fellows, and David Taylor followed Bevan into his cell and attacked him over a period of four and a half minutes before leaving him to bleed to death.
Prosecutors revealed that Bevan suffered at least 30 injuries, including slashed major blood vessels and wounds to his heart. One injury was severe enough to cut into bone, leaving him fatally wounded and struggling for life inside the cell.
The three defendants entered Bevan’s cell in quick succession after he arrived. CCTV footage showed them exiting the cell afterwards, appearing calm and satisfied, which suggests the assault was premeditated.
Jason Pitter KC told the court that the entire attack lasted four minutes and 39 seconds, highlighting the brutal efficiency of the assault. The trial will examine the motives and involvement of the inmates in the killing.
