Tragedy struck the Cheltenham Festival 2026 as four horses died during the event, raising serious questions about the safety standards of the prestigious horse racing festival.
On the final day, Friday 13 March, 12-year-old Envoi Allen collapsed and died shortly after crossing the finish line. Later that same day, another horse, Saint Le Fort, suffered a fatal fall during a race. These heartbreaking incidents cast a shadow over the festival’s grand finale.
Earlier in the week, the festival was rocked by additional fatalities. On Wednesday, 8-year-old HMS Seahorse sustained a deadly injury on the track. On Tuesday, 8-year-old Hansard fell hard and suffered a fatal leg injury, which was confirmed after the second race.
The Cheltenham Festival is a key event in the National Hunt racing calendar. However, this year’s series of equine deaths has intensified debates about the safety of jump racing. Critics are calling for urgent action to improve protections for the horses involved in these demanding races.
