Countdown to Chaos: Nearly 1.2 Million UK Businesses Face Major Tax Digital Overhaul in One Month!
Over 2,000 UK businesses are signing up daily for HMRC’s new Making Tax Digital (MTD) scheme ahead of the April 1 deadline. Nearly 1.2 million firms must switch to digital record-keeping and submit VAT returns online – or risk falling foul of the taxman.
HMRC Sounds Alarm: Sign Up Now or Get Left Behind
HMRC has already sent letters to every affected business explaining what to do. So far, 30,000 have jumped on board. The message is clear: don’t delay. Businesses must use MTD-compatible software to keep digital VAT records and file returns from April onwards.
Big Promise: Save Time, Avoid Mistakes, Focus on Growth
“Making Tax Digital helps businesses get their tax right first time,” says Mel Stride, Financial Secretary to the Treasury. “It gives them more control over their finances so they can concentrate on innovation, growth and job creation.”
Theresa Middleton, Director of the MTD Programme, adds: “With over 160 software options – including free ones – there’s a solution for every business. It’s time to get on board and join the thousands already reaping the benefits.”
Experts Warn: Don’t Get Caught Out
Marco Forgione, CEO of the British Antique Dealers Association, urges all firms to act now: “There are simple solutions to make VAT filing straightforward. MTD will streamline record keeping, ease submissions and slash errors. The process is straightforward and efficient.”
What Businesses Need to Do—Fast
- Check if your business is VAT registered and affected by MTD.
- If you use an accountant, ask how they’re handling the transition.
- Ensure your current software is MTD-compatible.
- If not using software, choose one from the many available – some free, some paid.
- Sign up to the MTD service and authorise your software.
HMRC’s GOV.UK site offers detailed info on software and signing up. Some products even work alongside spreadsheets, so businesses don’t have to overhaul their current systems completely.
The clock is ticking. From April 1, it’s digital or bust for VAT returns in the UK.
