Baby Chokes on Fever Medicine – Firefighter Saves the Day!
Chaos hit a Cape Town home on 14 November 2025 when baby Daniel Pharoe suddenly choked after taking fever medicine. His mum, Miriam Pharoe, sprang into action, rushing him towards help. Instead of the hospital, she stopped at the nearby Brackenfell fire station – a decision that proved crucial.
Firefighter’s Fast Action Turns Crisis Around
Firefighter Arlin Thielman was ready and waiting. With calm precision, he stabilised baby Daniel, changing his emergency status from critical yellow to green before they even arrived at CapeGate Mediclinic.
“That 5–10 minutes of help, tapping him, showing us which position to keep him, reassuring us, calling for a rescue vehicle, the calls to CapeGate Mediclinic and the check-ins on our way and while we were at the hospital, we appreciate it,” Miriam told the Cape Argus.
Mayor Praises ‘True Cape Town Hero’
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis heaped praise on Arlin, calling him “’n ware Kaapstad-held!” and saying, “Ons stad is trots op hom.” South Africans flooded social media, thanking the firefighter for going above and beyond.
Everyday Heroism Saves Lives
For Arlin Thielman, it was just another day on the job. But for little Daniel’s family and a grateful city, his quick thinking was nothing short of a miracle. This **firefighter’s lifesaving rescue** proves real heroes don’t always wear capes—they wear helmets.
