Boris Johnson Survives Confidence Vote but Faces Tory Revolt

Boris Johnson clung to power with a shaky 59% backing from Tory MPs, as a massive 148 Tories demanded he be shown the door. Out of 359 MPs who cast their votes, only 211 stood by the beleaguered Prime Minister.

Rule Shield May Not Keep Johnson Safe for Long

Under current Conservative Party rules, Johnson cannot face another confidence vote for a year. But the powerful 1922 Committee of backbenchers holds the hammer to change those rules whenever it wants.

Starmer Slams ‘Divided’ Tories Propping Up Johnson

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer wasted no time ripping into Johnson’s shaky grip on power. “The choice is clearer than ever: divided Conservatives propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to address the issues you face,” Starmer blasted.

“Alternatively, a united Labour Party with a plan to tackle the cost-of-living crisis and restore trust in politics. Labour will get the United Kingdom back on track.”

Pressure Mounts After Sue Gray’s Partygate Report

The PM’s survival comes despite mounting calls for his resignation following Sue Gray’s explosive report on the PartyGate scandal. At least 54 Tory MPs – 15% of the parliamentary party – signed letters demanding a confidence vote.

Sir Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee, confirmed on Sunday that the vote threshold had been met. He and Johnson agreed the showdown would happen Monday.

Brexit Minister Jacob Rees-Mogg weighed in, saying Johnson only needed one vote to survive. “It’s no good saying that the party rules say something and then there’s some other rule behind it that nobody knows and is invented for the purpose,” he said bluntly.
