A car fire near East Midlands Airport has caused major disruption on one of Britain’s busiest motorways. The M1 southbound is completely blocked between junctions 23A and 24, resulting in significant traffic congestion for drivers in the Kegworth and Leicestershire areas.
National Highways has halted southbound traffic following the vehicle fire, which triggered a major incident close to the airport. The motorway remains closed as fire crews continue to tackle the blaze, leaving motorists stranded in long queues.
Firefighters from Castle Donington, Coalville, and Loughborough quickly responded to the scene to control the fire. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue confirmed that there have been no injuries reported but warned that the disruption could continue for some time.
“Emergency services are in attendance. Allow extra time if travelling in the area or heading for the airport,” advised National Highways.
The fire is still ongoing, and drivers are urged to seek alternative routes and prepare for significant delays when travelling near East Midlands Airport today.
