Firefighters from across Southampton responded swiftly to a significant blaze at a derelict building on Waterloo Road in Freemantle. The fire erupted around midday on Monday, April 26, sending thick black smoke into the sky and drawing attention from local residents.
Initial reports indicated the derelict site might have been used as a shelter by members of the homeless community. Upon arrival shortly after 12:10pm, fire crews conducted a thorough search to ensure no individuals were trapped inside the building.
Three fire engines from St Mary’s, Eastleigh, and Cosham stations worked together to tackle the flames. The South Central Ambulance Service also sent one ambulance to the scene as a precaution. Hampshire Police closed Waterloo Road at the junction with Vara Road and Park Road, blocking traffic in both directions to allow emergency services to operate safely.
Authorities have confirmed that the fire is not being treated as suspicious, ruling out any foul play. Firefighters successfully contained the fire to a garden shed attached to a two-storey building, which sustained only smoke damage.
A police spokesperson said: “We were called just after 12pm to reports of a fire on Waterloo Road, Southampton. Officers assisted Hampshire Fire and Rescue as they dealt with the fire. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.”
Residents and drivers are advised to avoid the area while emergency teams continue to clear the scene.
