Border Crisis Update: Migrant Crossings Surge
Meanwhile, Dover is facing a major spike in migrant Channel crossings. On 26 January, Border Force reported 30 more migrants arriving in seven boats amid a rare weather lull.
This surge adds to an already staggering 1,308 illegal maritime arrivals so far in 2022 — nearly six times the 223 boats recorded in January 2021.
Last year saw 28,401 migrants crossing UK borders, with 4,500 asylum seekers passing through safe countries first. Around 60% departed France, though over 2,500 Channel migrants remain inadmissible.
Military Role in Crisis Under Scrutiny
The Defence Committee slammed the Ministry of Defence for snubbing a session on military involvement in stopping crossings. Warnings were issued that deploying Royal Navy vessels could backfire, encouraging even more crossings.
“There’s a risk they’d be seen as a ‘taxi service’,” said MP Mark Francois.
