Amazon has started its futuristic drone delivery trials in Darlington, making it the first city in the UK to test the Prime Air service. This trial paves the way for the official launch of Prime Air in 2026.
The fleet is led by the sleek MK30 drone, which promises lightning-fast and safe parcel deliveries like never before.
Prime Air is Amazon’s advanced drone delivery system designed to deliver small parcels weighing up to five pounds directly to customers’ front doors in under two hours. Residents of Darlington will soon be able to order a variety of items, including daily essentials, beauty products, and the latest technology, all delivered by drone.
Although the MK30 drones are already operating above Darlington from Amazon’s local fulfilment centre, full delivery services have not yet started. The official rollout of Prime Air is planned for later in 2026.
David Carbon, Vice President of Prime Air, stated: “Starting flights in Darlington marks an important milestone. Safety is our top priority. We have worked closely with Darlington Council and the Civil Aviation Authority. Our MK30 drones operate quietly and efficiently. We look forward to showing how this tech can serve Darlington while maintaining top safety standards.”
The MK30 drones are designed to be as quiet as an average delivery van. Engineers have optimised the propeller designs to minimise noise, ensuring that the drones operate without disturbing households or pets.
The drones have full approval from the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority and feature advanced detect-and-avoid technology. This allows them to dodge obstacles even when these are not present on satellite maps.
Key safety features of the MK30 drones include onboard cameras that scan the skies to avoid aircraft and birds, advanced machine learning systems that identify people, animals, and obstacles, and an independent monitor capable of instantly taking control to safely return the drone to base if necessary.
With Darlington leading the way, Amazon is transforming parcel deliveries across the UK, making them faster, quieter, and safer. Stay tuned as Prime Air prepares for a nationwide launch.
